rents beware of NY landlord.
Former Tenant
Pros:
This is a three floor townhouse style unit with one apartment on each floor. The rooms are massive, so are the kitchen, bathroom and living room. The front rooms get so much sunlight. This unit also has two exist doors. Also the neighborhood is fairly safe at night given the police station is on the corner over.
Cons:
The biggest thing for all three of the roomies was the noise. The people above us (who was also the super) have a very sweet little boy who had temper problem. He would stomping and yelling until 3am on a semi normal basis. We would often tell the landlord and super about this and were met with denial from both of them, would be told what we were actually hearing was the radiator or the W/D… One time we sent the super video recordings of his kid stomping and yelling. We were told the video was fabricated and the sounds in the video were fake.
One of my roommates told me one day the landlord stopped by (unannounced)while the kid upstairs was running across the apartment. My roomie told him this happens all night until 3 some nights. Andy looked around and asked what she was talking about. She said the running and stomping. Andy then told her “I don’t know what you’re talking about I don’t hear anything.”
We weren’t allowed to use the parking spots and were told if we did our cars would get towed. the backyard use is only the third and first floor (family). We also weren’t allowed to have a W/D even though the super mentioned they had one.
In my 12 years of being a renter in NY I have never dealt with a landlord or living situation like that before. Andy also waits until the very last weeks before resigning the lease to tell you he is raising the rent. We asked him if we could see the lease, just to make sure nothing else was changing and he refused until the day we signed. Before moving in the roommate before me said I should really think long and hard about moving in because Andy was unfair and unkind to renters particularly women. I thought “he wouldn’t be that bad” lol Andy has called me needy, and attention seeker and has said in passing “female renters too entitled.”
Advice to owner:
Update the apartment before raising the rent. Stop assuming we know everything your thinking it going to do. be better on enforcing the same rules you wanted us to follow with all the units.
