Renters Beware: Pests, Theft, Poor Management
Former Tenant
Pros:
Location is the only pro, and it's what you'll pay for here. One block away from Prospect Park is ideal, but it will cost you financially, in quality of life, and in the loss of your sanity in this building.
Cons:
PESTS: Resident of NYC for 15+ years and never dealt with pest problems like these. There is a full rat infestation in the basement/side lot. Don't think about storing your property in the "storage units" in the basement unless you look forward to your stuff being covered in rat feces. Cockroaches will undoubtedly join the party. And I'm not talking about the small ones; I'm talking about the huge, fist-sized ones with no shame. They will prance out in front of you and parade their complete disregard for survival because they are so pervasive. Garbage management (lack thereof) exacerbated the issue. It was truly disgusting.
THEFT: If you are not home 24/7, prepare to have your packages ripped open and stolen and spend chunks of your time and money trying to get refunds or filing police reports. If you don't mind a little package mischief from time to time, then prepare to have your security deposit interest stolen illegally by the owner after you move out.
POOR MANAGEMENT: The building is managed by chaos alone. God forbid you need any maintenance done here or you get locked out, it will be a struggle, and it will cost you. While the newer renovations look sleek, it's all done with poor craftsmanship and cheap materials. After an electrical fire and hurricane flood in which water was literally pouring into the building, there was very little care, concern, or support expressed toward tenants from the landlords and super during those times. Moving out? The owners will hire the most insufferable broker who will impede on your right to occupy the space. Want to pay rent? Prepare to time travel back to 1980 and write physical checks.
Renters: Take photos of everything when you move in and after you move out because these owners play dirty and feign ignorance of the law when the law is there to protect you as a tenant. Don't say you weren't warned.
Advice to owner:
Get a new gig because this one isn't it for you.
