Building Could Be Much Better
Pros
Most of the tenants are very nice and respectful. The elevator generally functions and there is trash and recycling collection in the back yard.
Cons
Constant loud music playing on the street and from some apartments. The building is infested with roaches. No matter how clean you are, there is absolutely no way to do away with them. The exterminator comes once monthly and is here for less than five minutes. The owners don’t care about anything but the rent. Repairs are only made when the City comes to inspect a Section 8 apartment. If you are not Section 8, you’re out of luck. Repairs are done poorly. Front door keys to the building cost $50 each and you must either go to Valley Stream or send only cash through the mail. No checks or money orders. One front door key per family. Three washers and two dryers in the building for 61 units to share. To pay rent electronically, there is a $25.00 surcharge.
Advice to the owners
Stop being slum lords by being inflexible about your tenants buying keys. If you are willing to accept a check or money order to pay rent, why would you only accept cash for keys? Get an exterminator service that comes more than once monthly to get rid of the roaches. Make repairs quickly so tenants do not keep calling and leave messages that electrical outlets need to be fixed or plumbing leaks under the sinks. This is a business for you but this is our home! Do the correct thing!!
