My Upper West Side Dream
Pros
This is a beautifully preserved historic building on a landmarked block just steps from Riverside Park. In addition to the stunning Beaux Arts architecture, the building boasts a historic plaque designating it as the former home of the famed writer and poet Dorothy Parker. As far as Upper West Side charm and historical significance, it doesn’t get better! The building was privately owned for decades by a landlord who cared deeply about it and its tenants. He kept the rent reasonable and retained tenants for years, if not decades. Everything about it was well-maintained by the attentive super, and the neighbors were respectful and pleasant. I was very happy to make my home here—it was a dream.
Cons
Unfortunately, the building was recently sold and the new owners are having all the tenants cleared out —many of whom have called it home for over 20 years and have now been priced out of the neighborhood. It has been a very sad affair, especially since this type of thing is happening all over the city.
