Apartment with tall windows

Pros

The building is clean and generally quiet. New appliances. No cockroach or rat problem. Has a cute backyard (to which tenants don’t have access to). The building has washer and dryer.

Cons

The building is located next to a nut house, the reason why i’m saying that is because there is a guy with orange shorts who comes out from that building and slams the door and screams at random hours. Also that place plays loud music from 9AM till 3-6PM on some weekends while you are trying to sleep-in for the weekend. I don’t know if it was only our unit, but we had a leak from the ceiling whenever it rained (mind you, above us we have an another apartment and not a roof). Our unit is backyard facing and during winter we get plenty of sunlight, but in summer barely any sunlight because the trees in the backyard cover all the windows.

Advice to the owners

Maybe cut the tops of the trees a little bit

You can find something better

Pros

I loved my apartment itself (4F). The renovations they did to my unit were really nice (all white tiles, countertops and cupboards in kitchen and bathroom). It was really nice and airy — felt like a little oasis in the city. I lived here for about 5 years.

Cons

At the time I lived there, the property owner had previously been rated one of the worst slum lords in NYC. It showed in the lack of care for the building and for those who lived in it. The common areas were awful. Some of my elderly neighbors who had lived there for years ended up taking it upon themselves to sweep and mop once a week. There was no maintenance person on site who kept up the building or the property. When I moved out, I had to harass management for weeks to get my deposit back. I think I finally received it a couple months after I’d moved out.

Advice to the owners

Put someone on staff who can care for the building and make it feel safe and livable. Fix the stairs. If you haven’t already, install secure mail boxes (they were all broken when I lived there — our mail was al over the floor).
