UNLIVABLE, UNPLEASANT & UNRESPONSIVE

Pros

We thought we liked the recent renovations until we learned the landlords did not have permits for any of the work, causing carbon monoxide leaks from all of the in unit stoves & the water boiler in the basement for six months without any of the tenants' knowledge. Landlord kept turning on the heat without National Grid re-inspecting, causing the tenant's to have to call National Grid only to find carbon monoxide was still leaking in the problem areas. This was a four day process.

Cons

Carbon monoxide leaks for 6 months, water shutoff for over 48 hours and sporadic shutoff without notice, no heat throughout winter, illegal unit in the basement, exposed wires, did not salt the walkway- tenants had to buy and take care of the ice, multiple water leaks from the roof into apartment and laundry room that were never patched up. Radiators would frequently leak water all over the floor next to outlets and electronics. Landlords are extremely petty, non-responsive, and ignore tenant rights. Building is still not registered on HPD since the building was rented to tenants June 2023- the previous owner is still listed. We threatened to withhold rent until we were given our right to reliable heat throughout October - February and they threatened to report us to our creditors.

Advice to the owners

Know the laws & follow them, work on what's wrong with your building instead of threatening your tenants to get paid & follow the legally required permit & inspection process

DO NOT MOVE HERE - UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS

Pros

The apartment was nicely renovated, but this hid ALL of the flaws.

Cons

- Suffered repeated carbon monoxide poisoning due to water heaters and ovens being improperly installed (no permits were pulled during any of the renovations). Owner told us to "Open a window" as the solution to this repeated issue. He repeatedly put our lives at stake, and National Grid almost shut down the gas lines to the entire building (which would have condemned the building). - No proper inspections by the DOB, unlicensed workers did the renovations - No consistent heat during the winter months - Water supply was terminated for 48 hours without warning, owner blamed the tenants when the real issue was that the centuries-old sewage pipe broke because owner did not replace it when needed. - Illegal converted basement unit downstairs - tenants are unable to access the boiler room, water heater, & breakers in case of emergencies. The owner is now getting fined by DOB for this and has to go to court. - Extremely slow response to maintenance requests - we waited 6 months to get a mailbox, doorbell, smoke detector, and lighting fixed. Stairwell to the basement is hazardous, not lit, and stairs occasionally collapse. - Owners did not properly file with HPD - building is unregistered, no bed bug reports. - When threatened to withhold rent until heating, carbon monoxide, and water issues were resolved, owner threatened to call & report us to our creditors - No proper HPD signage posted

Advice to the owners

Obtain proper permits, be more responsive to your tenants when they are actively in danger, and do not cut corners!
