Don’t be deceived

Pros

Lots of historical details were kept in our apartment like the original fireplace and moulding. And the apartment gets a beautiful amount of light.

Cons

Absolutely everything else. The landlord is by far the worst one I’ve had, and in my lifetime I’ve moved 10 times. There’s barely any upkeep of the common areas and he would constantly deny that there was a roach infestation even when dead ones could be seen on his door mat! When our heat went out during single digit nights he would take his time to get someone to fix it. His “repair guy” is an absolute joke as well. I can’t even get into the horrible plumbing, the leaking roof, the property manager who would threaten us for trying to report or get something taken care of, the live wires hanging from the hallways, and the 10% RENT INCREASE, the list goes on. He’s the epitome of a gentrifying slumlord. Our sweet neighbor who had lived in Harlem her whole life could be seen sweeping the sidewalk everyday yet our landlord was always seen leaving for his vacation home in a pink polo, flip flops and his golf clubs.

Advice to the owners

Just sell this property for the amount it’s actually worth not some inflated market rate and move to Westchester already. And please sell it to someone who actually cares about being apart of the community and who actually understands and takes to heart the requirements of being a landlord. I would also advice him to get an ACTUAL job instead of preying upon everyday New Yorkers who are just trying to get by.

First Apartment Experience

Pros

Great location, Close to transit, Neighborhood is modernizing, Surrounded by Columbia University Property, Across from a Columbia Presbyterian, Plenty of restaurant’s

Cons

Narrow and awkward railroad floor plans, Ugly and off putting exposed piping in bathroom, apartment had no closets, no storage space, most windows face adjacent building, constant and ongoing heating and hot water issues literally every year (I lived in this building for 7 years) unfriendly biased super who rarely fixed anything without making a bigger mess.

Advice to the owners

Employ supers who are willing and able to conduct themselves with respect when they enter someone’s apartment.
