Good building in great shape
Pros
Landlord is an individual who lives in the area and much more responsive than your typical faceless management company. Nice small building in great shape, nice neighbors
Cons
Cigarette smoke smell in the stairwell would sometimes get into apartment
Obsessive and greedy landlord. Avoid!
Pros
Nice neighbors (but they have all moved out or are moving out), cute building, responsive landlord (but, see below).
Cons
Tenants of all of the units in this building (except the super’s) are moving out this summer, because nobody wants to continue dealing with the new landlord, Chad Kurland. He could be the main character in the movie, There Will be Blood. He pretends to be a regular person with a day job and a family, but he is obsessive about his property, hangs around all the time, does not understand privacy, and he will scream, make false threats, or send illegal notices to make tenants agree with what he wants. He made my roommate cry, and he made my neighbor fear that they’d be kicked out of their home during the pandemic. He is not the small-time, nice guy landlord he makes out to be; he is experienced, has owned in multiple boroughs, just bought the building next door, and will probably be buying up more of the neighborhood in the future. We feel bad for the super, who needs to work for him.
Advice to the owners
Give tenants some space, see us as human beings, be kind to the super, and spend more time at your day job. Continuing to be a landlord will probably make you more greedy and a worse person.
