Do it yourself
Pros
Love the neighbors, proximity to the park, interior is spacious enough. Front yard has garden space.
Cons
Questionable construction in the interior, and even sketchier maintenance. Uneaven stairs, broken fridge handle, floor coming up in places, mold-stained caulk in bathroom, kitchen countertop falling apart and collecting water, toilet handle falls off frequently and needs to be re-glued, the main bedroom has the worst ceiling patch I have ever seen, and the ceiling has leaked several times. Landlord insists of “fixing” these things himself. Landlord is generally patronizing when you ask him for anything, and will hold it over your head since it’s your “privilege” to live in his house. He has no respect that the renters pay for this space to be their home, and has almost no knowledge of his legal obligations as a landlord. He will always make it feel like you are on thin ice, and hold the lease over your head when you don’t do what he wants. He is a very passive bully, generally uncooperative, and extremely unpleasant to have a professional relationship with. One time he tried to blame us because he left the water running in the basement. Another time he tired to narrow our entranceway to 2’ wide (fire code violation!) and eliminate our stair handrail (just dangerous). He also took out the hallway light, and we had to ask for it to be replaced (he replaced it with a loose bulb dangling from the wires... you get the picture? This guy does not care about you or how much money you are paying.
Advice to the owners
Hire a professional for maintenance - you are not qualified to provide that kind of service to people who are paying you for an adequate living condition. Work with your tenants instead of in your own interest only. Buck up and be open and transparent with the people who are paying you.
