Great rental spot as long as you don’t complain
Pros
Wonderful neighbors, great neighborhood, clean building. And rent stabilized units!
Cons
New management started in August 2023. Implemented new policies like reducing laundry hours to 9-5 when most people work. Locked access to people’s individual storage units, which was then escalated to City Council who stepped in to support the tenants. When tenants started to complain about the overall management, including putting a sign on the elevator, the management retaliated by shutting the elevator down for 3 weeks right before Christmas and a little past new years. They also called the cops on the tenant that put up the sign. Over 6 NYPD officers came aggressively to investigate the sign on the elevator. Our building has many elderly tenants and families with newborns on the higher floors, so those few weeks without the elevator was extremely difficult. We currently have only 2/5 dryers working in the laundry room for a building with 60 units, but management says it’s not their job to fix it. They also put up an unsafe scaffolding, and shortly after there was a fire in the back of our building. Management has been quiet about the cause - but if it was started by a tenant we all would’ve faced the consequences by management.
Advice to the owners
We are a building filled with working class families. We don’t want trouble. We just want working facilities available at a reasonable hour. We like the cleanliness, Antonio is great. Please stop retaliating when tenants have valid complaints.
Not Perfect, but Good Value
Pros
Really nice original touches like archways and floors. Always warm enough. Great neighbors for the most part. Friendly super. Monthly pest control available.
Cons
Definitely needed to crack a window in the winter because the heat is too efficient, and needed a humidifier. Antique floors are beautiful but can be very creaky. Upstairs neighbor was an early riser who regularly disturbed my sleep. Someone in the building regularly blasts terrible 90s grunge music. They got a noise complaint and turned it down, but it was still audible in my bedroom sometimes all day long. Hallway floors don't get mopped regularly. Trash chute rooms are FILTHY, look like they've never been cleaned. For some reason there are garbage cans in the trash chute rooms where people put garbage, despite the fact that the chute is RIGHT THERE. But you have to take your recyclables down to the basement. Only saw one roach in the bathroom one time. The sign up sheet for pest control was used by several people each month, though, mostly residents on the upper floors. Some of the washing machines malfunction regularly, even brand new ones.
Advice to the owners
The apartments with newly renovated kitchens and bathrooms are great, how about putting some of that money into keeping the hallway floors and stairs clean? Get rid of the garbage cans in the trash chute rooms, people leave rotting food garbage there and it's disgusting.
